For sale is a Tea caddy of rectangular form with canted corners. It has a flat shoulder and an upright neck. It has Chinese Imari motif decorated in underglaze blue, iron-red and gold. The original cover is missing and is fitted with an unmarked silver plated mount. The silver plate is gone on the outside (base metal of brass is exposed). I left to outside unpolished as not to disturb the dark natural patina of the brass. On the inside of the cover the silver plate is in very good condition. Decorated with different flowering plants like; peony, aster, and cherry growing among a central cartouche with a building landscape with various flowering plants. On the flat shoulder there are two cartouches filled with vine like flowering plants with single flower heads. Many flowering plants all have their own symbolism; depicted together they also symbolize nature’s wealth, and hence riches. Height including cover is 5 1/2″ (139.8 mm) Height excluding cover is 4″ (101.6 mm) 2 1/4′ (57.1 mm) wide and 3 3/4″ long (95.25 mm) 1″ (25.4 mm) neck height and about 1 (25.4 mm) mouth rim and the weight including top is about 9 ounces. Chinese Export teapot, Imari flowers, Qianlong ca 1750
This is a beautiful little teapot made in China for export to the West in the Qianlong period, ca 1750. The teapot is potted in thick greyish porcelain with shiny glaze, and was decorated with beautiful Japanese-style imari peonies in underglaze blue, overglaze orange and a bit of gilt. The pot has a globular shape and is stood on three little feet. Its spout and handle are embossed like the branches of a tree. The shape of the teapot is interesting; it strongly resembles the English Worcester teapots of the period, showing how the two styles influenced each other at the time. The teapot came from the collection of a Dutch collector who acquired this from a recognised dealer in The Netherlands the 1950s. Its authenticity has recently been re-confirmed by a recognised expert in antique Chinese porcelain based in the UK, based on its shape, the type of porcelain body and glaze, and the decoration. CONDITION REPORT The body of the teapot is in perfect condition. There are some flakes and chips off the underside of the rim. There is one chip off one of the feet. The decorations are bright and untouched and there are no cracks either in the body or to the spout of the pot. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i. A nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera – I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures. DIMENSIONS height 13cm; diameter from spout to handle 17cm. The item “Chinese Export teapot, Imari flowers, Qianlong ca 1750″ is in sale since Sunday, July 28, 2019. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian/Oriental Antiques\Chinese\Porcelain”. The seller is “rattlethecups” and is located in London. This item can be shipped worldwide.
